On Friday, 13 October, the Speaker, Councillor Rodney Kritzinger joined a team from the local radio station, NFM 98.1 and members of the public to participate in the DAREdevil run to spread awareness on prostate cancer, by jogging through the streets under the theme: Shine a Light on Prostate Cancer: Spreading Knowledge, Saving Lives.

The efforts are aimed at increasing public knowledge and understanding of cancer, its causes, symptoms, prevention, treatment options, and available support services. It involves generating widespread recognition and attention to various types of cancer, their risk factors, early detection methods, and the importance of seeking medical advice for timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

The primary objective of cancer awareness is to empower individuals to make informed decisions regarding their health, raise funds for cancer research, reduce stigma surrounding the disease, and ultimately improve outcomes for those affected by cancer.

Furthermore, on Saturday 14 October, the Nama Khoi Local Municipality, in aid
of awareness, supported the CANSA Relay For Life Drive 2023 held at the Springbok Showgrounds.

This was the first relay since the COVID-19 pandemic that brought the entire world to a standstill.

The field was transformed into a colourful tapestry of hope and support as the CANSA committee warmly welcomed the most important guests of the evening, the cancer survivors.

There were information booths where attendees could learn more about cancer prevention and early detection, as well as about CANSA’s work. The atmosphere was infused with warmth and camaraderie.

The highlight of the day was the relay itself. Teams signed up to participate in this symbolic walk. Each team member took turns walking around the field, carrying a baton to symbolize the journey of cancer patients and their loved ones.
The relay continued throughout the day and into the evening, symbolizing the relentless fight against cancer.

At sunset, as darkness fell upon the town, the field came to life with hundreds of flickering candles. The luminaries created a breath-taking display of unity, honouring those affected by cancer and remembering the ones who had lost their lives to the disease. Tears mingled with smiles as the beauty and significance of the moment touched every heart present.
The CANSA Relay Drive exceeded everyone’s expectations in terms of funds raised and the sense of unity it fostered within the community. It served as a reminder that they were making a difference and standing strong against cancer.
